Learning goals
The students should be able to apply in different projects the techniques learned in this course. The techniques are mainly applied in Condensed Matter Physics. Examples are given both for Physical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.
Syllabus
Classification of material characterization techniques.
Metals and alloys. Equilibrium binary diagrams. Fe-C equilibrium diagram. Cooling diagrams out of equilibrium. Thermal and superficial treatments. Sample preparation techniques. Mecanical materials characterization techniques. Metalographic optical microscopy. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and transmission (TEM). Mössbauer spectroscopy. X- ray diffraction techniques. Chemical composition analysis techniques: Microprobe analysis (EDS and WDS). Mass spectroscopy (SIMS and SNMS). Photoelectronic spectrometry (XPS) and of Auger electrons (AES). Thermal characterization techniques: Dilatometry and thermogravimetry (TG). Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Prerequisites
